The Student SM is arranged once a year and the various Swedish student equestrian clubs take turns to be the organizer. Each club sends two teams, a dressage team and a jumping team, with three riders in each. Subject to space, each club may also send individual starting riders. The Student Championship runs Friday-Sunday with the annual meeting on Friday followed by jumping one day and dressage the other.
All riders are drawn so that three riders from different teams ride the same horse, then the starting order of the horse is also drawn. In jumping, it is important to get the highest style points and in dressage to get the highest percentage on the horse to advance to the next round. Each rider may ride their horse for 5 minutes before the start, in the show jumping you may also jump two jumps in the warm up. The rider with the highest score of the riders on the same horse advances to the next round and is drawn again on a new horse and the same procedure is repeated for the final.
It is a fantastically fun competition both to compete in and to follow as a supporter. The team that spreads the best atmosphere and cheers for both their own and other teams is awarded with the cheerleader award.
